Research and Evidence: What do Phiten products do? Why do they contain titanium?

Founded in Japan in 1983, Phiten has developed a unique line of titanium enhanced products, including necklaces, bracelets, tape, and numerous other products now sold around the world.

Numerous web sites talk about Phiten's efficacy and whether magnets affect health and how Power Balance products were a scam. Many people do not realize that Phiten does not use magnets and Phiten technology is based on entirely different science than Power Balance. Phiten products rely on embedding titanium in necklaces, bracelets, and other products.

Why do Phiten products contain titanium? Numerous sources show why titanium's high biocompatability is making it increasingly useful in the medical field. Because it is non-toxic and is not rejected by the body, it is used in a wide range of medical applications including surgical implements and implants.

Beneficial effects include anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant activity, and promotion of nerve cell growth.

Titanium has also been shown to positively affect the mammalian nervous system

Microtitan (titanium particles just microns wide) has been shown to relieve pain.

see: Korte M. Influence of Aquatitan Tape on nerve cells of the central nervous system. Journal of Clinical Biochemistry and Nutrition 43, 1-4, 2008.

Microtitan was also found to relax the autonomic nervous system, which is associated with the cardiovascular system, internal organ function, immunity, stress, and emotions.

These studies are promising, and Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine (Japan), Technical University Braunschweig (Germany), UCLA (United States) and Massey University (New Zealand) are now starting medical research on the Aqua Titan material used in Phiten products. We look forward to unbiased, replicable, double-blind studies of Phiten products on humans, but as of yet,the FDA has not evaluatee Phiten statements or products, and the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), a government agency studying unconventional approaches to health care, has not specifically studied the health effects of titanium.

What will rigorous human trials of Phiten products show? Will there be convincing proof that Phiten necklaces significantly diminish pain and relax muscles? Will the proof hold up over time?

There is currently a fascinating debate and no little consternation in the scientific community over a phenomenon sometimes called the "decline effect" which shows that previously rigorously proven scientific data often becomes increasinly impossible to replicate. As Jonah Lehrer writes in The New Yorker: "We like to pretend that our (scientific) experiments define the truth for us. But that's often not the case. Just because an idea is true doesn't mean it can be proved. And just because an idea can be proved doesn't mean it's true. When the experiments are done, we still have to choose what to believe."

see: Jonah Lehrer. The Truth Wears Off: Is there something wrong with the scientific method? The New Yorker 52 - 57 December 13, 2010

And so, in the absence of solid scientific proof, we invite you to perform your own, personal experiment. Try a Phiten product. If it doesn't do what you want it to do, we will gladly accept it back and refund your money. Our current rate of return is less than 2%.

More than 100 people including many Phiten users have added their comments since this article was first published on 10/6/2008.
